Finding Rest in Jesus
Spring break—a time when textbooks close, and we take a pause from the buzz of school life. Yet, even in this break, many of us find ourselves wrestling with stress, anxiety, and the need for acceptance. In the midst of these struggles, let's explore a different kind of rest—the rest that Jesus offers in Matthew 11:28-30.
“Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you and learn from me, for I am gentle and humble in heart, and you will find rest for your souls. For my yoke is easy and my burden is light.”
The Yoke of Christ
In ancient times, a yoke was a wooden beam placed between two animals, allowing them to carry heavy loads together. But it was also a metaphor for the teachings of a particular Rabbi. When the disciples of a Rabbi would share his teachings - they would take on their Rabbi's yoke. When Jesus invites us to take His yoke upon us, He's offering to us His teachings, our sin and burdens are placed on his cross through the Gospel. Unlike the heavy expectations of the world, Christ's yoke is light, bringing peace and rest to our souls.
The Rest of Grace
The Bible teaches us about grace—a gift from God that we receive through faith, not because of what we do, but because of what Christ has done for us. This grace gives us rest from the exhausting effort of trying to earn our way into acceptance. It tells us we're already accepted, loved, and valued just as we are. We don't have to have a viral post, be the most popular in school, win the state championship, or ace every test we take. We understand the mistakes we make - but there is one place we can place those burdens in our lives. That is the cross of Jesus Christ.
Living the Unburdened Life
This all sounds great as a theological exercise, but how do we live out this restful life found in Jesus Christ? The honest truth is to daily remember the Gospel's promise and letting it shape our thoughts and actions. The best way we can do that is simply going back to the source, the Holy Bible. When anxiety whispers, grace speaks louder, the Scriptures are reminding us that we're not alone. We find community and support in our shared identity in Christ. By reading the Bible, we're connected to an ancient faith of billions of believers who faithfully lived before us. Even more so, we're connected to a loving God who sacrificed himself to be with us.
Rest in Christ
As we enjoy our spring break, let's accept the invitation to rest—not just physically, but spiritually, in the assurance of the Gospel. Let's lay down the weights we've been carrying and take up the light yoke of Jesus through diving into his teachings found in the scriptures. Fall in love with the words of Jesus as shared in the Gospels.
Reflection
Think back to a moment when you felt overwhelmed by what others expected of you. Reflect on how embracing the Gospel's message of rest could transform your view of these pressures.
