Mrs. Thurman has been a preschool teacher for 34 years. After receiving a degree in Early Childhood Education, she opened a preschool with extended daycare in her home in Missouri. Gretchen has been Christian Education Director at several of the churches that she has been a member of over the past 26 years. Mrs. Thurman administers the Gesell Developmental Assessment to prospective kindergarten students. She and her husband have taught Sunday school together and have been youth group coordinators. She has lived in Missouri most of her life, but also lived and taught in Wichita, Kansas and in Houston, Texas before coming to Prince of Peace in 2001. Gretchen and her husband, Bill, have two married daughters and five grandchildren.
Mrs. Thurman uses hands-on learning in her classroom, with lots of art and literature. She believes in positive reinforcements when teaching, and that a child’s work is “play”. She says, “One can never give a child too much praise, and time spent with a child is never wasted.” She also added, "We base coat them and send them on."
The Thurman’s attend St. Philip's Episcopal Church in Frisco.
