Eighth Grade

Grammar

Textbook and Supplementary Materials:
Grammar and Composition, Heath
Vocabulary Workshop, Sadlier-Oxford

Supplementary materials at teacher’s discretion.

Supplies:
Blue or black pen (erasable preferred), red pen, notebook paper, spiral or composition note book, and White three-ring binder.

Students will keep their binder in the classroom. The binder will include class notes, handouts, homework, quizzes, tests, and grammar terms. Students will only take the binder home to study for an upcoming test.

Course Description:
Students in English class are given the tools needed to effectively communicate both orally and through written means. Emphasis to structure and form is given to grammar, spelling, mechanics, and the development of sentences, paragraphs, and essays. Students will be required to write in a variety of forms and to present their work orally both within the classroom and in a larger middle-school coffeehouse setting. In preparation for high school and college entrance exams, emphasis is also placed on systematic vocabulary development.

Faith Based Objective:
* Fall Semester: Communicating God’s truth effectively in a Christ-like manner.
* Spring Semester: Learning more about God as Creator through creative expression.

Literature

Textbook and Supplementary Materials:
Prentice Hall Literature, Prentice Hall
The Witch of Blackbird Pond, Elizabeth George Speare

Other supplementary materials will be provided.

Course Description:
Students will be exposed to a variety of genres in literature including the novel, short story, essay, poetry, and drama. They will not only learn characteristics of each genre, but they will also learn how to think analytically and critically about the selections they read. Thematically, the eighth-grade year will focus on American Literature and World War II, corresponding with the eighth grade American history class.

* Fall Semester: Critical evaluation of issues and biblical truth through novels, short stories, and essays.
* Spring Semester: Critical evaluation of issues and biblical truth through novels, poetry, and drama.

Course Description:
In this course, students will learn basic algebraic methods and how to use them in real life situations.

Faith Based Objectives:
* Fall Semester: Through our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ we have been blessed with an ability to think critically and gain a slight understanding of how God created our world with the use of Algebra and Geometry.
* Spring Semester: The students will learn that our abilities to problem solve, reason, and interpret basic Mathematical functions are a blessing from God.

Course Objectives:
Students will develop problem solving skills, reasoning, and the ability to make connections in conjunction with algebraic processes. They will be asked to explain, justify, verify, interpret, draw, and label – in short, to critically think all the time.

Supplies:
pencils, red pen, loose leaf notebook paper, small binder, 1 spiral notebook for notes.

Math- Algebra

Supplies:
Red notebook, two tab dividers, college ruled paper, blue or black ink pens, and a red ink pen. A floppy disc is helpful during projects so that the student can work on this at school and home.

Course Description:
Students will study the history of the United States from the early Native American societies through the period of Reconstruction, which ended about 1877. The students will learn about the people and events that created our nation and government, formed our society and shaped our beliefs and principles. Students will study the United States Constitution, the Bill of Rights, and the rights and responsibilities as citizens of the United States of America.

Faith Based Objective:
* Fall Semester: The student will understand God's hand of blessing upon this nation as it was explored and settled.
* Spring Semester: The student will understand the blessing of the privileges and rights as United States citizens.

Course Objectives:
* The student understands traditional historical points of reference in U.S. history through 1877.
* The student will use geographic tools to collect, analyze, and interpret data.
* The student understands the geography of the U.S. and its’ impact on history and culture.
* The student understands why various sections of the U.S. developed different patterns of economic activity.
* The student understands the origins and development of the free enterprise system.
* The student understands the American beliefs and principles reflected in the U.S. Constitution and other important historical documents.
