Technology Program

Program Philosophy

The Prince of Peace technology program enables students to effectively develop capabilities in a constantly changing computer oriented world. It is important that students obtain skills and understand how to use these skills to function effectively.  Since we are becoming increasingly dependent upon computer technology, our students must be equipped with the abilities to solve problems, think logically, and analyze information using the computer as a tool.  Given the ability to use the computer as a tool, the students can use their computer literacy to God's glory in their future career.

General Goals

  • Students will be able to use the computer as a tool for manipulating words, numbers, and information.

  • Students will learn what computers can do and are being used for in society today.

  • Students will learn computer vocabulary.

  • Students will learn structured thinking and problem solving.

  • Students will become proficient at keyboarding skills.

  • Students will develop the ability to use advanced computing and communications technology.

Prince of Peace follows the philosophy of integrating the use of the computer into the rest of the curriculum whenever possible.  The computer is used as a tool for learning, whether it be for research, publishing, presentation, art, or skills practice.   Students will learn to differentiate between acceptable and unacceptable ways of using technology.  See the school's Acceptable Use Policy for more information.

There are, however, specific computer literacy objectives, which are expected to be met at each grade level.  Most of these objectives are met through the use of computers in other learning experiences.

Each class for kindergarten through fifth grade have scheduled times for computer lab use.  Kindergarten classes are scheduled for one 30 minute period per week.  Grades 1 through 5 are scheduled for two 30 minute periods.

Middle School

Middle school students at Prince of Peace may choose from a variety of computer electives.  Every student will be required to successfully complete Computer Literacy before graduation from eighth grade.

Middle school students also have many opportunities to use the computer as a part of their other classes. Examples of this may include using the computer for journal writing in language arts classes, doing research for science or history projects, or producing graphs and charts for math or science classes.  The middle school currently has one stationary and one mobile lab.

Computer Literacy
This class covers a wide variety of computer related topics.  Students will learn basic computer system components.  They will also be given experience using a word processor, spreadsheet, database, graphics programs, and Internet applications.  Techniques for efficient, successful research are also covered.

HTML and Web Page Design
Students will begin by learning the basics of HTML.   They will then have the opportunity to design and publish a personal web page, as well as assisting lower grade classes in the construction of web pages for the schools web site.  Students will gain experience using web page editors and graphics programs.   Successful completion of Computer Literacy is a prerequisite for enrollment in this course.

PC Repair and Maintenance
Students will gain experience in diagnosing and repairing PC computers.  Participants will have the opportunity to construct a computer system using used PC parts.  Successful completion of Computer Literacy is a prerequisite for enrollment in this course.
