A note regarding class size:  In the elementary school, the aide is present on a scaled number of hours based on the age of the students in the class and the size of the class.  For instance:  A preschool and Kindergarten class will have an aide for 5 hours when the class is filled. 1st and 2nd grades have 4 hours of teacher aide time regardless of class size; aide time increases if there are more than 22 students.  3rd through 5th grades will have 2 hours of aide time if the class size is 21 or 22 and 4 hours if 23.  Classes are allowed 6 hours of aide time if it is full at 24.  Middle School classes will share their aide.  The class sizes are a target number of students/teachers in a classroom.

Are there ever exceptions?  Yes.  In very special circumstances exceptions may occur.  Those are allowed after being reviewed on an individual basis by administration.  On those occasions where a class size exceeds our standard number, the aide time is generally increased.

The Zone (Extended School Coverage - Before/After School)

The Zone offers extended care to students in Preschool 3’s through 6th grade.  The Zone is offered from 7:00 a.m. – 6:00 p.m. on Monday through Friday.

Summer in the Zone:  Full time coverage during the summer (approx 10 weeks)

The Zone will not offer care 2 weeks prior to the beginning of school.  This allows teachers to prepare their rooms for the new school term and yearly maintenance to take place.  One additional day for teacher in-service is periodically taken.

Camping in the Zone:  Summer camp opportunities are theme based: sports, art, music or science. These camps are available both to our current families and the community.  Information is typically available in February.

Holiday in the Zone:  Coverage for those days that school is not in session.

Student Transfers

You may consider a transfer into Prince of Peace Christian School at any time during the year when vacancies exist.  It is preferred to have student transfers take place before the last two months of school unless the family has recently moved to the area.

Enrollment and Registration

Applications are accepted year round and placed in the “waiting pool”.  Current families receive their re-enrollment paperwork following the Christmas break.  Their deadline to return paperwork and maintain priority placement is January 31.  Following the January 31 deadline for current families, their siblings and church members, we are able to fill vacancies from the waiting pool.  Although first come basis is one of many considerations in acceptance, all placements are subject to the student testing, meeting entrance requirements and receiving approval to enter the requested grade.

Families may turn in an application with the application fee and paperwork at any time of year.  Registration and Enrollment Fees for New Students are not required until you have received your notification of acceptance.  Students applying for Kindergarten and above will be called to arrange a date for testing.  After testing, and re-enrollment processing, we send graphed testing results and a placement recommendation letter.  You then have seven days to request an appointment if you would like to discuss the testing results, or, if you are ready to proceed, to pay the registration (annual) and enrollment (first year only) fees of $500 each.

Scholarships

Families who wish to apply for tuition assistance for students in grades Kindergarten and above are encouraged to pick up a financial aid packet in early January.  Our funds for scholarship are limited and are considered on a first come, first served basis, first to current families and then to new families who have made application for their student to attend.  The financial aid committee awards the money we have available based entirely on financial need, usually by February.  Scholarships are not available for Preschool.

Information About the Admission Testing Instruments

Gesell Developmental Evaluation
Used for entrance into Kindergarten and 1st Grade

The Gesell test is a developmental evaluation rather than an academic test and has no right or wrong answers.  The evaluator sits and talks with your child as he or she performs several tasks such as drawing, building and following instructions.  The evaluator will consider the processes, the organization, the method, the overt behaviors, verbalization as well as the end product to determine the child’s developmental age in motor skills, language, personal, social and adaptive areas.  Children feel very much at ease and perform at their developmental level.  This is approximately a thirty-minute evaluation that is one on one between the tester and the student.  A test time is scheduled by the Principal, usually in January, after receiving an application for the student.  *

Peabody (P.I.A.T.) Individual Achievement Test
Used for entrance into 1st – 4th Grade

This is an individually administered achievement test providing assessment in six content areas.  Each subtest covers a wide range of levels from Kindergarten to post high school.  Testing is administered in the appropriate range for the applicant’s grade level.  The testing uses multiple choice, free response and written answers.  *

General Information: Measures general information about the world around them.

Reading Recognition: Starts with pre-reading questions measuring the child’s ability to recognize the sounds associated with printed letters and proceeds to the child reading printed words aloud.

Reading Comprehension: Measures the child’s understanding of what he/she read.  Children testing for first grade generally do not proceed to this area. The child will read a sentence silently and then is asked to choose one of four pictures that best illustrates the sentence.

Mathematics: Uses multiple-choice items to test knowledge and application of mathematical concepts and facts.

Written Expression: Assesses the subjects written language skills.  For children testing for first and second grade:  Tests pre-writing skills-copying and writing letters, words and sentences from dictation.  For children testing for 3rd grade and above: The child writes a story in response to a picture prompt.

Spelling: Uses multiple-choice items to measure the ability to recognize standard spelling by choosing the correct spelling of a word spoken by the examiner.

Independent School Entrance Examination (I.S.E.E.)

Used for entrance into 5th – 12th Grade

Prince of Peace Christian School uses the ISEE in testing new applicants in grades 5 and up.  The ISEE is used by many private schools as a way of comparing applicants from different lower and middle schools.  Prince of Peace desires to make certain that each student has an opportunity to be successful with our curriculum.  The test is prepared and scored by the Educational Records Bureau (ERB).  Students may test at a number of area sites including Prince of Peace during the Dallas testing time frame.  While the bulk of testing takes place in December and January to insure placement where space is limited, there are test times available between December and April.  When applying for the ISEE test, your testing fee allows you to send your child’s score report to six schools.  Fees vary according to the amount of advance registration.  Three weeks prior to the test date the cost will be $78.  Two weeks before, the cost is $98 and requires a fax registration.  Walk-in registration is available on a first-come, first-served basis and cannot be assured due to limitations on test materials and staff.  That rate is $108.  The ISEE Operations Office web site is www.iseetest.org or they can be reached at (800) 446-0320, 9:00 to 6:30 Eastern Time, November through February.

The ISEE is a three-hour admission test that has three age/grade levels.  The Lower level is for students currently in grades 4 and 5 who are candidates for admission to grades 5 and 6.  The Middle level is for candidates in grades 7 and 8 and the Upper level for candidates in grades 9 through 12.  At all levels, the ISEE consists of three parts.  (a) carefully constructed and standardized verbal and quantitative reasoning tests that measure your capability for learning; (b) reading comprehension and mathematics achievement test that provide specific information about your strengths and weaknesses in those areas; and (c) an essay section. *

Otis Lennon School Ability Test

April through August testing for 6th – 12th Grade

Most families are considering enrollment for the following year early enough that they could register for the ISEE test between November and March to take the actual test between December and April.  We do have some families applying later in the year and into summer.  For those families we proctor the Otis Lennon School Ability Test in the Prince of Peace admissions office.

Upon conclusion of testing and when the student’s application file is complete with all requested paperwork such as birth certificate, immunization records, report cards (if applicable) and prior teacher evaluations, the graphed results and recommendation or acceptance letter will be mailed to parents.  Middle and High School students would also have a scheduled interview with a staff member from their grade level.
